"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit."
― Aristotle
In Mike Tyson’s early career as a boxer, he stated this in an interview: “No one wants to get up at 4:00am in the morning when it’s pitch dark, but it has to be done. The only reason why I do it so early is because I believe the other guy isn’t doing it. And that gives me a little edge. The most difficult part about fighting is the training because, believe it or not, the easiest part about fighting is the fighting.”
Excellence is a talent or quality which is unusually good and so surpasses ordinary standards. It is also used as a standard of performance as measured through economic indicators.
Nowadays, the term “Excellence” gets thrown around with its soul mate, “Greatness”. And even though these titles are both pursued EVERY SINGLE DAY through books, blog posts, YouTube video clips, and magazine articles, you can still see that the title of excellence is rarely achieved.
When I was spending time (months) researching the work ethic and the mindset of great athletes such as Mike Tyson, I was blown away by the discipline and the relentless pursuit of excellence. It did not matter what was going on or what was said; he stayed the course and dominated it. The result of Tyson’s mind, body, and spirit training was his amazing victories. He was a gladiator! He was the embodiment of what happens when you develop mental and spiritual muscle to dominate on your Mount Olympus.
Excellence can never be achieved over night. It’s the embodiment of great practice and great performances. It is the embodiment of great trials and great triumphs. Here is a formula I created 14 years ago to achieve excellence. It’s very simple, but very hard to mix for a long period of time. If you can withstand all that will happen during your pursuit, the result will be eternal.
Rahfeal Gordon’s Formula for Excellence
D3=F
Discipline x Dedication x Determination = Forever
- Discipline: the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behavior, using punishment to correct disobedience. (You must hold yourself accountable for every decision you make and every second you waste. Repetition is the crown of kings.)
- Dedication: the quality of being dedicated or committed to a task or purpose. (Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, should make you think twice about the purpose of your commitment to a task that will have you in the realm of excellence. You cannot take a day off for anything or anyone.)
- Determination: the process of establishing something exactly, typically by calculation or research. (Be a student to the game. Research, plan and execute.)
- Forever: for all future time; for always. (When you embody the 3 D’s – your life and name will be FOREVER echoed in the hallways of eternity)
